“Greta Thunberg must be eaten by cannibals”. The shocking phrase against the Swedish activist, stopped by Israeli forces while trying to reach Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid, is by Eli Roth . The site “A Shot Magazine” reported it with a screenshot. Known for his horror films, Roth published a story on Instagram with this phrase, in truly questionable taste, against the young activist. And he continued in a second Instagram story, published shortly after, in which he wrote: “If you published Greta’s anti-Semitic propaganda, you are dead to me”. Thunberg had been stopped on board the humanitarian ship Madleen of the NGO Freedom Flotilla, which left Italy on June 1 to bring aid to the Gaza Strip . The vessel was however stopped, in international waters according to the activist, and Thunberg and the other activists were expelled from Israel. Upon her arrival in Paris, Greta Thunberg declared that she had been kidnapped by Israel in territory that was not under its jurisdiction. Thunberg, let us remember, is known for Fridays for Future and her school strikes for the climate; her latest social battle is to stop the genocide of the Palestinian people. In the meantime, Thunberg has returned to Europe, after being briefly detained by Israeli authorities. And she has not commented on Roth's exit.

Comments on social media

Many have done so, on X and other social media. “Remember that Eli Roth is a xenophobic Zionist and no one should support him or his films of…,” is one of the more calm comments. “Director Eli Roth deserves nothing but the worst, for rejoicing in the genocide in recent months and even providing data on pro-Palestinian protesters.” Some are calling for a boycott of his films: “When you buy or download or stream his films, you are giving money to the Zionists.”

The comments on Instagram were similar: “I will never watch anything with you in it again. Disgusting behavior. You will be seen as someone who was on the wrong side of history. I am so disappointed in you.” And: “You picked a bad time to drop the mask”; “Wishing violence on a young woman fighting against genocide . Oh, there is a special place in hell for you.”

Who is Eli Roth?

Who is Eli Roth? You have probably seen him as the Bear Jew in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds". As a director, he has directed various horror and splatter films, including "The Green Inferno", which focuses on a group of kids who venture into a forbidden area and end up being victims of a cannibalistic ritual. A wave of indignant comments has engulfed Eli Roth, 53, born in Massachusetts to an Ashkenazi Jewish family of Austrian, Russian and Polish origins. His films as a director are classified as "Torture porn" or "Gorno", that is, gore plus porn. There are often scenes of extreme violence.

The actor and director, who married for the second time in Florence in 2020 with the wedding officiated by the then mayor Dario Nardella, is experiencing one of the worst moments of his career, having also been replaced as director of his latest film, “ Borderlands ”, which grossed very little compared to its budget, and during the filming of which Roth was replaced as director by Tim Miller. There are already those who speculate that this exit could have repercussions on the rest of his career. Roth is working on the sequel to his slasher horror film “Thanksgiving”, produced by Spyglass Media, which recently fired Melissa Barrera from “Scream 7” for sharing a phrase regarding the situation in Gaza.
